Raw Writing
Raw Writing is the home of Carla Jenkins, a writer and teacher living in Exeter, Devon.
Raw Writing enables people to learn about writing, improve their writing, and be part of a writing community through online and in-person courses.
About Raw Writing
At Raw Writing, we feel passionately that writing is for everyone. It doesn't matter if you have a lot of writing experience or none at all - we care about creating a friendly and warm space where you can be inspired, share your love of writing with others, and receive expert tuition from professional writing teachers who love what they do.
Short Story, Memoir, Writing for Children, Crime Fiction, Nature Writing, The Novel, and Poetry are covered across a range of courses. Raw Writing also offers the opportunity to experiment with different types of writing through our popular ‘Pick and Mix’ courses.
Classes are always capped at eight people so that everyone gets a good amount of attention and the chance to be heard.
At Raw Writing, we also love running regular ‘Writing for the Joy of It' sessions and social meet ups which are free. We believe that everyone’s life can be improved by writing and want to reach as many people as possible.

About the Founder - Carla Jenkins
Raw Writing was founded in 2022 by Carla Jenkins, a writer and teacher living in Exeter. Carla’s debut novel, Fifty Minutes, was published by Hachette in May 2024, and her second novel is due for publication in the summer of 2026.
In 2019. Carla did a Masters in Creative Writing at Exeter University and loved it. She missed it so much when it was over that she decided to set up Raw Writing to recreate all those wonderful aspects of the MA and give to others what was one of the best experiences she’d ever had.
Raw Writing enables people to learn about writing, improve their writing, and be part of a writing community. Everyone is welcome.
Raw Writing Community
At Raw Writing, we know the importance of being part of a writing community, so we hold a monthly social event which is free to attend and gives people the chance to come and meet others who love reading and writing.
These are on the last Friday of the month, from 5pm at various pubs across the city, and details can be found via the button below.
