We’re seeking a Public Programmes Manager!
Exeter City of Literature is seeking a visionary Public Programmes Manager to lead our current portfolio of unique programmes and create new programmes and events in the years ahead. Join us to shape bold, inclusive programmes that celebrate Exeter and Devon as a region of stories, culture, and creativity.
📍 Location: Exeter, Devon (option to work from home up to two days per week depending on in-person events/meetings)
🕒 Contract: 0.8 (four days per week)
💼 Salary: £30,000-£33,000 (FTE), based on experience
🤝 Responsible to: Executive Director
🤝 Responsible for: Freelancers, volunteers, and interns as required

This role would suit someone with a passion for cultural engagement, a creative mind, and the organisational confidence to deliver impactful, high-quality programmes while multi-tasking a range of projects and responsibilities. You will be just as comfortable meeting and talking to new people as you are working with a high degree of autonomy and independence. You do not need to have worked in a literature-specific role before — we value transferable experience and creative yet strategic approaches to programming.
Existing programmes you will manage include the annual Book Market and Slamovision, twice-monthly Silent Book Club, ongoing Little Frawzys and Bibliotherapy in the Community, and UNESCO projects as they arise. See all of Exeter City of Literature’s programmes here.
Essential skills that would help you in this role:
Demonstrable experience in the end-to-end management of public-facing cultural programming, from designing to establishing to evaluating.
Experience of working with diverse audiences and embedding inclusion in your practice.
Strong organisational and project management skills, with experience in budget oversight.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work within a small team and collaboratively with a range of local, national, and international partners.
A proactive mindset with an independent approach to problem-solving while remaining cognisant of open communication with staff, stakeholders, and volunteers.
An understanding of evaluation, reporting, and the importance of continuous improvement.
An eye for creative opportunity and an innovative yet practical mindset to bring ideas to life.

We’re seeking a Fundraising Consultant!
Exeter City of Literature is seeking a fundraising consultant. You will be responsible for identifying multi-year grants and submitting applications. We’re a small team with big ambitions, and an essential part of our future growth is the recruitment of a
Fundraising Consultant!
You will be responsible for identifying significant grants to support core (multi-year and/or six-figure grants for a minimum of £30K per year) and submitting applications. These grants will support our work in the areas of well-being & reducing loneliness, skills development, cultural programming, and place-shaping.
Qualifications
Essential
Proficient in fundraising for charities with proven recent success in obtaining multi-year,
six-figure grants from relevant trusts and foundations.
Very familiar with Esmee Fairbairn, Garfield Weston, Wolfson, and/or National Lottery
Heritage Fund.
Strong research and writing skills and adept at building a compelling case for support for a
cultural charity that works across the arts, well-being, skills development, and social impact.
Knowledge of the cultural sector, social impact charities, and/or the arts in England.
Proactive relationship-builder skilled at negotiating and using expertise to influence
decisions.
Self-motivated with excellent time management.
Ability to work independently and with a small team.
Proficiency with Google Drive suite.
Experience working and communicating with a Board of Trustees.
Role: Fundraising Consultant
Fee: up to £400 per day depending on relevant experience, with the possibility of a higher fee upon
receipt of successful bids
Contract: Temporary (6-month contract to start with, at 1-2 days per week depending on deadlines
and capacity)
Location: Remote, with occasional travel to Exeter as needed. Desk space is available at Exeter
City of Literature office located at Exeter Phoenix.
Responsible to: Executive Director and the Chair of the Finance & Fundraising Committee
