The Devon & Exeter Institution

Founded in 1813 to promote ‘the general diffusion of Science, Literature and the Arts, and for illustrating the Natural and Civil History of the county of Devon and the History of the City of Exeter’, the Devon & Exeter Institution is a book-lovers gem in the heart of the city, and was the workplace of the country's first professional female librarian Eliza Squance from 1849.

Not only does The Devon & Exeter Institution have a distinguished past, but an incredibly exciting present and future! Turner Prize nominated Dr Ingrid Pollard is in post as Residency & Research Partner until October 2022 and there's an ambitious renovation project for the building starting this summer. Plus, there's a wonderful series of events such as poetry workshops and their Bookworms Junior Members Club.

We couldn't be more thrilled to have them on the Partnership Network, and it's a pleasure to work alongside them in one of the most gorgeous buildings in Exeter! We might just have the best office in town — check out the reel we made for a little tour, or become a member and experience it with us!

The Devon & Exeter Institution houses a fantastic library collection, in its original Regency setting. The entire collection is available to members for research and non-members can get a day’s membership! When you make an appointment, a table is booked for you in the Inner Library, tucked in a cosy nook to ensure you can enjoy your selection in peace and quiet.

Our wonderful heritage collection dates back to the 15th Century, reflecting the interests of our early proprietors. It covers philosophy, literature, travel, science, and natural history. We also hold a fantastic collection focusing on the history of the South West, including publications, historical newspapers, pamphlets, and street directories - a rich source of information for local and family historians!
