Africa Writes Exeter author event: Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi

  • Exeter United Kingdom (map)

On Tuesday 24 November at 4pm on Crowdcast, award-winning Ugandan writer Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi will be reading from and discussing her recently published novel The First Woman with Billy Kahora. In this coming-of-age tale, Makumbi reworks histories, myths and feminist thinking, as we follow the story of a young woman, Kirabo, finding her place in the world as her country is transformed by the bloody dictatorship of Idi Amin.

This event forms the first in the four-part Africa Writes – Exeter Book Club, launched through the Exeter UNESCO City of LIterature programme. Over the next six months, the aim is to get readers across the South West of the UK and East Africa reading and starting conversations around the four book club titles (although you don’t need to have read the book ahead of attending the events!). There will be more news on the full programme and book club titles coming soon.
