The Folklore Library and Archive

The Folklore Library and Archive is a registered charity (no. 1203418) based in Crediton, Devon.

Its Patrons are Joanne Harris OBE and Michael Rosen.

The charity is dedicated to the collection and preservation of information relating to folklore, tradition and custom from across the world, but also has a focus on the county through its Devon Folklore and Heritage Collection.

The Folklore Library and Archive has a particular interest in saving at-risk heritage, with a focus on people's personal collections and interests.

Its holdings, which can be consulted in person or online, include:

  • a reference library of over 2000 books, plus hundreds of journals and periodicals

  • document archives

  • photographic archives

  • audio and video archives

  • physical artefacts

You can find the Folklore Library and Archive located in the rear courtyard at Tanners' Yard, 100 High Street, Crediton, Devon, EX17 3LF.

Whilst the building does not have step-free access at this time, materials can be made available in another location for anyone with mobility issues.

The charity is currently open between 10am and 4pm on a Wednesday and Friday and at other times by appointment.
