Compact Commissions

Stories and literature have shown themselves to be a strong art form amidst the huge change to culture brought on by COVID-19. Book sales and library membership are at an all-time high and the role of stories—how, why, and to whom we tell them—has never been so important.

To reflect this, we invited proposals from artists living and practising in Devon to submit proposals for projects that would reflect the importance of stories and literature, and to respond to Exeter UNESCO City of Literature’s Strategic Priorities. Each project was awarded £500 to produce a final piece of work.

We were overwhelmed by the amazing responses, which included proposals from across all art forms, and we have now selected 10 projects that we will be sharing with you over the coming weeks. The selected artists are:

Marcus Brown (FABLAB Exeter) | Katy Cawkwell | Richard Chappell | Naomi Hart | Aya Labib | Natalie McGrath | Emma Molony | Jon Nash | Yalla Arts & Circle Tales | Chris White
